The Icon of St. Thomas the Apostle |
| On Saturday, April 20, 2002, the parish
was introduced to its new icon of St. Thomas the Apostle, commissioned
to Sister Kathleen Holmberg, who is an iconographer. The icon was blessed
and carried in procession at the 5:00 p.m. Mass, and also carried in procession
at the other Masses that weekend. Sister Kathleen explained at each Mass
how she created the icon. Members of the Martin McDonough family donated
the icon in memory of Nora McDonough Zalesky.
The icon is now placed near the tabernacle.
"Icons are Sacred Scripture in color and form because they are based on the Word of God. This differentiates icons from what we normally refer to as religious art. We speak of an icon being written because of its relationship to Sacred Scripture." - Sister Kathleen Holmberg, CSJ, writer of the icon of St. Thomas the Apostle
You don't pray to an icon, you pray with an icon as
a window to the divine." |
